| Obverse description | Draped bust of Duke Charles III of Lorraine facing right, wearing a ruffled lace collar and armour, his hair rendered in fine curling detail. The effigy is contained within an inner circle, with the circumferential Latin legend reading clockwise from the upper right. Pellets serve as word dividers throughout the legend. The portrait is executed in the late Renaissance manner typical of Lorraine testons of this period. |
