Obverse description Bare-headed right-facing bust of Stanisław August Poniatowski, King of Poland, rendered in a neoclassical style with finely engraved hair tied at the back. The effigy is positioned centrally within a well-defined inner circle, occupying the full height of the field. The encircling Latin legend reads STANISLAUS AUGUSTUS D.G. REX POLONIAE M. D. LITU., designating the king by divine right as ruler of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania. The portrait displays restrained, elegant workmanship characteristic of Holzhaeusser's engraving style. No exergue or additional devices are present on the obverse.

Additional information

The talar koronny series under Poniatowski was minted against a backdrop of accelerating political catastrophe — by 1771, the Bar Confederation had been fighting the king and Russian influence for three years, and the First Partition was less than a year away. A gold example of this type is an anomaly: the talar was a silver denomination by definition, and gold strikings of this weight were almost certainly produced as presentation pieces or gifts rather than for any circulation purpose. The Warsaw mint's output during this period was chronically disrupted by wartime conditions and Russian interference in Polish fiscal policy.
