Additional information

Jan III Sobieski is remembered above all for the 1683 relief of Vienna, where his combined Christian forces broke the Ottoman siege — an event that effectively ended Turkish expansion into central Europe. His reign coincided with chronic fiscal strain from near-constant warfare, and talar production at Bydgoszcz served partly to pay military obligations rather than facilitate ordinary commerce. The Bydgoszcz mint operated under lease arrangements that changed hands repeatedly during his reign, which accounts for the notable variation in die workmanship across surviving examples.

Kop. 2002 encompasses multiple years of issue; earlier strikes from the 1670s generally show crisper work than the later dated pieces.
