Additional information

The szóstak of Jan II Kazimierz arrived during one of the most catastrophic decades in Polish history — the Deluge, which brought simultaneous Swedish, Muscovite, Transylvanian, and Cossack invasions and left the Commonwealth's treasury in ruins. Minting at Kraków continued through much of this period precisely because the city held symbolic importance as the coronation seat, even as the court fled north. Billon coinage of this reign was systematically debased to fund military expenditure, and the Kopicki references span multiple die varieties reflecting repeated adjustments to the alloy and striking standards across the 1650s and 1660s.

Counterfeiting was so rampant that the Sejm passed legislation specifically targeting szóstak forgeries in 1659.
