Additional information

The Algerian regency began taking shape almost simultaneously with this coin's production — Hayreddin Barbarossa was consolidating Ottoman suzerainty over the city in precisely these years, having invited the Porte's formal protection in 1519. Striking gold in Suleyman's name was a political act as much as a monetary one, broadcasting the new dynastic alignment to every merchant and trader who handled the coin.

Album 1317 covers a type notorious among collectors for inconsistent centering and irregular flans, a product of local workshop conditions rather than metropolitan Ottoman minting standards.
