Obverse description Central field bearing the multi-line Arabic tughra inscription of Sultan Selim II, arranged in horizontal registers in the characteristic Ottoman imperial calligraphic tradition. The legend is contained within a plain inner circle, beyond which a beaded border follows the coin's irregular hammered periphery. The mint name and regnal date appear within the lower register of the inscription. The flat, unadorned field between inscription and inner circle is consistent with mid-sixteenth-century Algerian sultani issues.
