During the Napoleonic Wars, Sint Maarten's chronic shortage of small change prompted colonial authorities to counterstamp existing billon stuivers — mostly worn Dutch and French colonial pieces already in circulation — rather than commission new coinage outright. The "C16" designation indicates a face value of 16 cents local currency, while the fleur-de-lis reflects the island's French administrative half under the prefecture system that persisted even after the broader Caribbean colonial order was disrupted by war and blockade.
The host coins vary considerably, and attribution is complicated by the absence of a Scholt or CNO reference number — the series remains incompletely catalogued.
