Obverse description Central device features the double-headed eagle of Groningen displayed with spread wings, rendered in the bold, somewhat crude style characteristic of late medieval hammered coinage. Below the eagle, a small shield bearing the city's arms is visible at the base. The entire design is contained within a beaded inner circle, with the circular Latin legend occupying the outer field. The eagle's plumage is rendered with hatched feather detail, and the heads face outward to either side in heraldic fashion.
