Obverse description A griffin passant to the left occupies the central field, depicted in high relief in the late medieval heraldic style, holding a fire steel and flint in its foreclaws. The creature is shown with spread wings, leonine hindquarters, and an eagle's head with open beak, rendered with characteristic Gothic expressiveness. A beaded inner circle separates the central device from the surrounding Latin legend. The inscription runs continuously around the periphery within the coin's irregular hammered flan.

Reverse description A long-footed cross with flared terminals divides the reverse field into four quadrants, at the centre of which is placed a quartered heraldic shield bearing the arms of Guelders — an eagle in the upper dexter quarter and diagonal barry stripes in the lower sinister quarter — executed in the Gothic heraldic tradition. The cross extends to the beaded inner border, its elongated foot projecting prominently into the lower field. The Latin legend is distributed around the outer margin within the irregular hammered flan, separated from the inner device by a beaded circle.
