Reverse description A large ornate floriated cross occupies the central field, its arms terminating in fleur-de-lis finials and joined at the centre by a quatrefoil boss. The four angles formed by the cross arms are filled with foliate and scroll ornaments, giving the design a rich, symmetrical appearance characteristic of late 16th-century Netherlands hammered coinage. A continuous Latin legend encircles the entire design within a beaded border.

Additional information

Utrecht's silver stiver issues of this period fall within the chaotic monetary environment of the Dutch Revolt, when the northern provinces were actively breaking from Spanish Habsburg administration and needed to assert independent coinage authority. The city of Utrecht, as one of the Union of Utrecht's original 1579 signatories, had particular political motivation to mint on its own account.

Ver#114.2 distinguishes this from the closely related 114.1 variety — collectors working Verkade's Netherlands municipal coinage typology will find the series finely subdivided, with die differences concentrated in the shield rendering and punctuation stops.
