Obverse description Facing crowned effigy of Count Robert III of Flanders, rendered in a stylized Gothic manner typical of Flemish sterlings of the early fourteenth century. The bust is depicted full-face with a prominent fleur-de-lis crown, with hair falling in loose curls to either side of the face. The effigy is contained within an inner beaded circle, outside which runs the circumferential legend in uncial Latin characters. The portrait is struck in relief on a slightly irregular hammered flan, with characteristic flatness to parts of the design.
