Obverse description Facing crowned effigy of the duke rendered in high medieval style, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The bust is stylized with schematic facial features typical of Low Countries sterlings of the late 13th century, surmounted by a prominent crown with fleurs. The circumferential legend in uncial characters is separated from the central device by the beaded border, reading in abbreviated Latin the title and name of the issuing count. The overall die work is characteristic of hammered coinage of the Guelders mint circa 1290.
