Obverse description Central device depicts a displayed double-headed eagle, its wings spread and talons visible, rendered in high relief within a plain inner circle bordered by a beaded ring. The eagle, an emblem of the Dampierre comital house, is boldly struck with fine feather detailing on the wings and breast. The surrounding legend reads + G COMeS FLANDRIe, identifying Gwijde (Guy) as Count of Flanders, separated by a small cross or rosette stop. The whole is enclosed within an irregular, slightly cusped flan characteristic of hammered medieval silver coinage.
