Johann III von Vienne held the see of Basel during a period when the bishopric's minting rights were under constant friction with the city's increasingly assertive burghers. The Stebler — a fractional pfennig-denomination struck in vast numbers for petty commerce — survives today almost exclusively in worn, borderline-identifiable condition. At 0.16 grams, the flans were cut so small that consistent die placement was nearly impossible, and off-center strikes are the rule rather than the exception.
