| Reverse description | A stylised grapevine bearing four pendant bunches of grapes, the principal civic emblem of Maroneia, enclosed within a linear square border. The entire design is struck in deep incuse, the square recess formed by a punch applied during the hammering process, a technique common to many early Greek silver issues. The legend ΕΠΙ ΖΗΝΩΝΟΣ, identifying the magistrate Zenon under whose authority the coin was issued, is distributed within the incuse square field. The vine motif reflects the renowned viticultural wealth of the Thracian coastal city and its primary export commodity. The incuse square itself is crisply defined with sharply recessed walls. |
