Obverse description Helmeted head of Athena facing left, wearing a Corinthian helmet pushed back on the head, rendered in fine archaic-classical relief. A serpent is visible below the chin, a characteristic apotropaic device associated with Athena in Syracusan coinage of the Timoleontic period. The portrait is boldly modelled with strong facial features, occupying the majority of the flan. No legend appears on the obverse.
