Thebes struck these staters during the city's brief but remarkable period of Panhellenic dominance following the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC, when Epaminondas shattered Spartan military prestige and left Thebes the preeminent land power in Greece. The magistrate abbreviation "THEOT" appearing on this issue helps anchor it within the chronology of the Theban hegemony — a window that closed abruptly at Mantinea in 362 BC with Epaminondas's death, after which the city's influence collapsed almost immediately.
Hepworth's die study remains the essential reference for sequencing these magistrate issues. BCD 546 places this piece within a well-documented but numerically limited group.
