Reverse description An Indian elephant walking to the right, rendered naturalistically in high relief, its trunk raised and large ear prominently displayed. Above the elephant, in the upper field, a spearhead is depicted pointing to the left, serving as a control mark. Below the exergual line, a Greek letter control mark appears in the lower field, varying by die (A, K, or a monogram). The reverse is enclosed within a shallow border, consistent with the hammered coinage of the Susa mint under Seleukos I Nikator.

Additional information

Seleukos I founded his dynasty after seizing Babylon in 312 BC following the chaos of the Diadochi wars, and by the time these staters were struck at Susa, he controlled territory stretching from the Aegean to the borders of India. Susa itself had been an Achaemenid royal treasury city — the mint there carried symbolic weight beyond its output.

Seleukos was assassinated in 281 BC, the same year this issue closes, making these late staters contemporary with his final campaign into Macedonia.
