| Obverse description | Diademed and draped bust of Sauromates I facing right, rendered in the Hellenistic portrait tradition with flowing hair secured by a royal diadem. The effigy displays finely engraved drapery at the shoulder and a characteristically stylized treatment of the hair. The peripheral Greek legend ΒΑCΙΛΕΩC CΑΥΡΟΜΑΤΟΥ (of King Sauromates) runs around the bust within a beaded border, identifying the Bosporan ruler. The portrait exhibits the hybrid Greco-Sarmatian artistic style typical of Bosporan royal coinage of the early 2nd century AD. |
