Additional information

Thebes issued this stater during one of the most consequential decades in Greek history — the period beginning with the liberation of the Kadmeia in 379 BC, when a small group of Theban exiles assassinated the pro-Spartan oligarchs and expelled the Spartan garrison that had occupied their citadel for three years. The city that emerged from that coup would, within a decade, break Spartan military dominance at Leuktra in 371 BC.

Hepworth's classification of this type refined earlier attributions by separating die linkages that BCD had grouped more broadly. The Ptoi... designation references the sanctuary of Apollo Ptoios in Boeotia, a regional cult center with direct ties to Theban civic authority during this period.
