| Obverse description | Griffin seated right in profile, with open beak, large spread wings raised above the body, and leonine hindquarters with a curled tail. The creature rests on a ground line, its forelegs extended forward with talons visible. The ethnic inscription ΑΒΔΗΡΙΤΕ appears along the lower field beneath the griffin, rendered in archaic Greek lettering. The design is executed in high relief with fine detailing on the wing feathers, characteristic of the accomplished die-cutters of Abdera in the early fourth century BC. |
