Lysimachos struck these gold staters from the Pella mint during the final years of his reign, a period of acute military and political pressure as he consolidated control over Macedonia following the defeat of Pyrrhus in 286 BC. The Pella issues postdate his assumption of the Macedonian throne and carry the full weight of that claim — invoking Alexander's authority to legitimize a king who had never been more than one of the Diadochi. He died at Corupedium in 281 BC fighting Seleukos I, and production at Pella ceased with him.
