| Obverse description | Diademed head of Alexander III the Great facing right, rendered in fine Hellenistic style with flowing, voluminous hair. A ram's horn of Ammon curls prominently over the ear, alluding to Alexander's divine association with Zeus-Ammon. The diadem is tied at the nape of the neck with trailing ends visible behind the head. The portraiture displays the idealized yet individualized features characteristic of posthumous Lysimachean coinage, with a strong profile and sensitively modeled facial musculature. The flan is slightly irregular, as typical of hammered gold staters of this period. |
