| Obverse description | Within a beaded border, a griffin seated right in high relief, depicted with leonine hindquarters, prominent wings, and an open-beaked head crowned with a crest of spiky feathers. The creature's long serpentine tail curls elegantly upward, and its right forepaw is raised. A branch or floral sprig appears before the griffin's chest. The bold, naturalistic rendering is characteristic of the fine Thracian die-engraving tradition of the early 4th century BC. |

Abdera's silver coinage was among the most carefully managed in the northern Aegean, with magistrate names appearing prominently as a form of civic accountability unusual for the period. Kleantides is attested as one of the issuing magistrates from the mid-fourth century, placing this stater within a generation of the city's recovery after Triballi raids devastated the region around 376 BC — an event serious enough that Diodorus Siculus recorded it explicitly.
