Reverse description Athena Nikephoros seated left upon a throne, her left arm resting on a large round shield decorated with a gorgoneion, while a long transverse spear leans diagonally in the background behind her. She holds Nike, the goddess of victory, in her extended right hand, who faces left and holds a wreath. The royal legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ runs along the right field; the civic ethnic ΒΥ appears below the throne, identifying the Byzantion mint. A monogram is positioned to the inner left field, and an ornate trident — the distinctive civic symbol of Byzantion — occupies the exergue.
