Obverse description Helmeted head of Athena facing right, depicted in the Corinthian style with the helmet crest adorned by a coiled serpent motif. The rendering follows the canonical Lysippan tradition employed across the Alexandrine gold stater series. The facial features are rendered with fine Classical detail, the cheekpiece of the helmet partially framing the goddess's profile. The field is plain, with no additional marks or symbols flanking the effigy.

Additional information

Chios was among the Greek island mints that continued striking Alexander-type coinage well into the third century BC, long after the king's death in 323 BC. This practice — issuing coins "in the name of Alexander" — was not mere imitation but a deliberate commercial strategy, as Alexandrine gold circulated at a premium across eastern Mediterranean trade networks. The island's position as a major wine exporter made reliable, recognizable coinage a practical necessity for large-scale mercantile transactions.

Price 2348 places this issue firmly within the posthumous series, distinguished from lifetime strikes by subtle magistrate marks unique to Chian production.
