Obverse description Diademed head of Asander facing right, rendered in fine Hellenistic style with curling locks of hair elaborately dressed and secured beneath a royal diadem, the ties of which are visible behind the ear. The portrait displays a youthful, idealized physiognomy with clean-cut features characteristic of late Bosporan royal coinage. The neck is draped, and the bust is truncated at the base. The field is plain, with no surrounding legend.

Additional information

Asander ruled the Bosporan Kingdom for decades, but his final years were marked by political desperation. Around 28–27 BC, he attempted to legitimize his authority by adopting the title of king rather than archon, a shift that coincided with the broader realignment of Black Sea client states under Augustan Rome. These staters belong to that narrow transitional window. Shortly after, rival claimant Scribonius appeared, backed by a Roman officer named Agrippa — and Asander, reportedly over ninety years old, starved himself to death rather than surrender power.
