Obverse description Griffin seated to left in profile, depicted with curved, stylized wings swept upward. The creature raises its right forepaw while the remaining three paws rest flat upon the ground, conveying a posture of alert vigilance. The griffin type is the longstanding civic emblem of Abdera, rendered here in the fine archaic-to-classical transitional style characteristic of the Thracian mint. The field is smooth and unlettered, with the design contained within a shallow incuse area typical of hammered silver coinage of this period.
