| Obverse description | Griffin seated to left in profile, depicted with curved, stylized wings swept upward. The creature raises its right forepaw while the remaining three paws rest flat upon the ground, conveying a posture of alert vigilance. The griffin type is the longstanding civic emblem of Abdera, rendered here in the fine archaic-to-classical transitional style characteristic of the Thracian mint. The field is smooth and unlettered, with the design contained within a shallow incuse area typical of hammered silver coinage of this period. |
