Obverse description Facing head of Helios, the sun god and patron deity of Rhodes, rendered three-quarter face with curly hair swept outward and radiating sunbeams projecting prominently around the crown of the head. The portrait is executed in high relief in the naturalistic Hellenistic tradition, with finely modeled facial features including slightly parted lips and a serene, idealized expression. The field is plain, with no surrounding legend, the entire composition dominated by the boldly struck effigy filling the flan.
