Obverse description Helmeted head of Athena facing right, wearing a Corinthian helmet adorned on the bowl with a prominent griffin in high relief. Curling locks of hair escape beneath the helmet's cheekpieces, framing the goddess's finely rendered profile. The neck is depicted with naturalistic detail, characteristic of the skilled Syracusan die-cutters of the late fourth century BC. The field is plain, with no legend on this side.
