| Obverse description | The Chimaera, the mythological hybrid creature and civic emblem of Sikyon, is depicted striding left in high relief, with its right forepaw raised in a dynamic posture. The creature displays a finely rendered lion's head with a flowing mane, a muscular equine body, and a serpentine tail curving upward. In the upper right field, a small wreath serves as a secondary symbol. Below the Chimaera along the ground line, the abbreviated ethnic inscription ΣΕ (for Σικυωνίων) appears in Greek letters. The rendering is vigorous and accomplished, characteristic of the skilled die-engravers active at Sikyon during the mid-fourth century BC. |
