Obverse description Griffin passant to right in high relief, depicted with outstretched wings, feline hindquarters, and an eagle's beak and forelegs, rendered in the archaic Ionian style. The creature's body is rendered with careful attention to feather detail along the wings and haunches. The city ethnic THI appears in Greek characters beneath the griffin in the lower field. The flan is broad and slightly irregular, consistent with early Ionian hammered coinage of the late Archaic period.
