| Additional information |
Struck at Olympia during one of the most politically charged periods in Greek interstate relations, this stater belongs to a coinage issued directly by the sanctuary authorities — not a city-state — to facilitate the enormous commercial activity surrounding the quadrennial Games. The 83rd through 85th Olympiads fall squarely within the era when Elis controlled the sanctuary, having expelled the Pisatans definitively around 572 BC and thereafter exercised jealous guardianship over both the religious rites and the monetary output of the site.
The sanctuary's right to strike its own coinage was rooted in the vast tributary wealth flowing into Olympia from pan-Hellenic dedications and athletic prize economies.
