Obverse description Facing right, the helmeted head of Athena is rendered in fine high relief, wearing an Attic helmet adorned with an olive wreath along the bowl. The goddess's profile exhibits crisp, naturalistic modeling characteristic of the accomplished die-cutters of Thourioi. The letter Ξ (xi) appears as a control mark in the left field. The design reflects the strong Athenian artistic influence present in the coinage of this South Italian Greek colony.
