Obverse description A boar rendered in high relief strides to the right with head lowered in a characteristic rooting posture, the body musculature and bristled dorsal ridge rendered with considerable naturalistic detail. The animal's powerful haunches and sturdy legs are boldly modelled in the archaic style. A partial Greek legend reading [MA]+VMN[AIOΣ], an ethnic referring to Methymna, curves above the figure in the upper field. The composition fills the flan with commanding presence, characteristic of early Lesbian coinage of the late archaic period.
