| Obverse description | An eagle, the sacred symbol of Zeus and civic emblem of Kroton, is depicted standing to the left with wings spread and head dramatically turned back over its right shoulder, perched upon an olive branch rendered with finely detailed leaves and berries. The bird's plumage is executed with exceptional engraving quality, with feathers individually articulated across the wing and body surfaces. The ethnic legend ΚΡΟΤΩΝΙΑΤΑΝ curves along the right field in crisp Greek characters, identifying the issuing city. The composition conveys a dynamic, almost heraldic monumentality characteristic of the finest South Italian Greek coinage of the early third century BC. |
