Obverse description Land tortoise (Testudo graeca) rendered in high relief, viewed dorsally, centered in the field. The carapace is depicted with meticulous naturalistic detail, showing the characteristic segmented scutes arranged in a symmetrical pattern across the domed shell. The head, four legs, and tail are fully visible, extending outward from beneath the carapace. The overall artistic treatment reflects the mature Aeginetan engraving tradition, with strong sculptural modeling and confident die cutting. The surrounding field is flat and unadorned.

Additional information

By the mid-fourth century BC, Aegina's commercial weight had long since collapsed — the island's fleet was destroyed and its population expelled by Athens in 431 BC, and though settlers eventually returned, the polis never recovered its archaic dominance of Aegean trade. These later staters were struck under Macedonian shadow, the series ending abruptly around 338 BC when Philip II's victory at Chaeronea effectively dissolved the autonomy of most remaining Greek city-states.
