| Obverse description | Diademed head of the deified Alexander the Great facing right, rendered in the Lysimachean tradition with the ram's horn of Ammon curling behind the ear, identifying the portrait with divine Ammonite attributes. The hair is rendered in flowing, deeply struck locks beneath the royal diadem, with fine artisanship characteristic of late Hellenistic die-cutting. The portrait occupies most of the flan, with open field to the right. The overall style reflects the posthumous coinage tradition established by Lysimachus of Thrace, here continued as a civic issue by Byzantion. |
