| Obverse description | Talos, the mythological bronze giant of Crete, depicted nude and facing, his broad wings fully spread to either side. In his raised right hand he hurls a stone, with a second stone held in his lowered left hand, conveying dynamic motion. The figure stands in a frontal pose characteristic of early Hellenistic die-engraving, with the legend T AΛ ΩN inscribed in the field identifying the deity. The treatment of the musculature and wings reflects the accomplished artistic tradition of Cretan mint engravers of the period. |
