Additional information

Pheneos was a minor Arkadian polis whose coinage is closely tied to the political turbulence following the foundation of the Arkadian League in 371 BC. The city's silver staters from this decade reflect a brief window of relative autonomy before Arkadian federal authority increasingly absorbed local minting activity. Production was almost certainly limited in volume, and the BCD collection specimen — catalogued under the Peloponnesos sale as lot 1615 — has long served specialists as a key typological reference for this series precisely because clean attributions are so rarely available.
