| Obverse description | A cultic tripod displayed in high relief at centre, its three legs surmounted by laurel wreaths and terminating in lion's paw feet, the whole set upon a base rendered as three horizontal lines. The tripod — civic symbol and sacred emblem of Kroton — is presented frontally and with exceptional clarity, occupying the full coin field. The abbreviated ethnic legend ϘPO (for Ϙρότων) appears in the field, rendered in archaic Greek retrograde characters. The design reflects the accomplished incuse technique characteristic of Achaean colonies in Magna Graecia during the late Archaic period. |
