Reverse description An apple (melon), the civic emblem and punning type of Melos, depicted in high relief at the centre of the field, its stalk rising vertically from the top of the fruit. The design is contained within a shallow incuse and is executed in the archaic Cycladic die-cutting tradition. The ethnic legend MAΛION appears around the periphery of the reverse field, identifying the issuing community.
