Obverse description Heroic head of the deified Alexander the Great facing right, portrayed wearing the Nemean lion's skin headdress — the scalp covering the crown with open jaws framing the face and the paws knotted at the throat — a device associating the king with Heracles. The portrait is rendered in high relief with finely detailed curling hair visible beneath the headdress, and displays the idealized youthful features characteristic of early Macedonian royal coinage. The field is plain, with no legend or inscription.
