| Reverse description | Incuse mirror image of the obverse type, produced by the characteristic South Italian incuse technique whereby the design is sunk into the reverse flan. The figure of Poseidon striding right appears in intaglio throughout, with the exception of the trident, which is rendered in relief against the sunken ground. The retrograde ethnic legend appears in the field in corresponding reversed disposition. The incuse border replicates the rope-pattern of the obverse. This bold compositional contrast between relief and incuse elements is a hallmark of early Poseidonian coinage. |
