Obverse description Facing right, the confrontational head of a roaring lion rendered in bold archaic relief, with open jaws exposing the teeth, a prominent mane indicated by engraved striations, and a deeply modelled brow conveying ferocity. The naturalistic treatment of the mane and musculature reflects the influence of the early Classical style, characteristic of Rhodian coinage of the second quarter of the fifth century BC. The flan is irregular in outline, typical of hammered silver issues of this period, with the design occupying the full available field.
