Kroton was one of the dominant minting cities of Magna Graecia in the late Archaic period, and its staters of this era are among the finest examples of the incuse technique — a method in which the reverse carries a sunken mirror image of the obverse design, developed in southern Italy and virtually nowhere else in the Greek world. The origin of this technique remains debated, with ancient tradition attributing its adoption among Achaean colonies to Pythagoras, though that connection is almost certainly apocryphal.
By 480 BC, Kroton had recently survived its catastrophic defeat by Lokroi and Rhegion at the Sagras River, a loss that effectively ended its political dominance in Bruttium.
