Obverse description Youthful bare head of Herakles facing right, depicted in fine high relief with idealized Classical features. The hero wears the scalp of the Nemean lion as a headdress, the gaping jaws and mane rendered in bold, sculptural detail framing the crown and nape of the neck. The hair beneath the lion skin is visible at the temple, and the overall style reflects the influence of late Classical Greek die-cutting of southern Italy.

Reverse description The eponymous hero Taras, nude or lightly draped, is depicted driving a fast-moving biga to the right, holding the reins in his right hand and a trident in his left. The horses are rendered at full gallop, conveying dynamic motion characteristic of Tarentine coinage. A thunderbolt appears in the exergue below the horses. The ethnic legend TAPANTINON and the magistrate's name API are inscribed in the field, written in Greek characters.
