| Reverse description | Eagle with wings folded standing to right atop an Ionic column capital, its head turned alertly forward with a hooked beak, the plumage rendered in fine engraved detail. The Ionic capital, with characteristic volutes clearly visible, serves as the perch and is a hallmark device of the sanctuary coinage of Olympia. The archaic digamma (Ϝ) appears to the left of the eagle and the letter alpha (Α) to the right, representing the abbreviated ethnic of Elis (ϜΑ for Ϝαλείων). The composition is bold and well-centred within the irregular flan. |
