Obverse description Conjoined facing busts of Emperor Hirohito, wearing glasses and a suit, and Empress Nagako, wearing a pearl necklace and a chrysanthemum tiara, in high relief against a polished field. A Japanese character appears in the lower exergue, and the engraver's initials ZA are visible at the lower right of the bust. The circumferential legend reads in German around the portraits.

Reverse description The sixteen-petal Imperial chrysanthemum seal of Japan is depicted in high relief in the upper field, above the German Federal Eagle with spread wings and a shield on its breast. The circumferential legend arcs around the upper portion of the field, with the year 1971 and maker's marks appearing in the lower exergue and field.
