Issued to mark the 200th anniversary of the marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, this Gibraltar piece is one of dozens of commemorative fractional gold coins the territory has produced under Royal Mint-adjacent licensing arrangements. Gibraltar has leaned heavily into anniversary issues since the 1990s, its status as a British Overseas Territory giving it the legal latitude to produce coins bearing the reigning monarch's effigy while commemorating events entirely unrelated to the island itself.
Victoria and Albert married on 10 February 1840 at the Chapel Royal, St. James's Palace.
